Have you ever wondered what firefighters do in between 911 calls and how your fire district serves you beyond emergencies? North Metro Fire Rescue District is holding its first Citizens Academy this fall for residents to get an insider’s view of the fire district.
2018 Citizens Academy - Sept. 5 - Oct. 16
Academy participants will learn the ins and outs of the fire district, from emergency operations to safety education. North Metro Fire’s Citizens Academy will cover a variety of topics, including:
- How emergency calls are dispatched
- What types of emergency calls North Metro Fire responds to
- How firefighters train to handle a diverse range of hazards
- What role fire prevention plays in the community
- How the fire district partners with community members to provide a safer environment for all
What to Expect
The six-week format will include both classroom and hands-on educational activities in each session that are designed to be fun and engaging for participants. Though not a program requirement, it is North Metro Fire’s hope that academy graduates will choose to get involved in the future as volunteers with any of the fire district’s committees, foundations or community outreach events.
The Citizens Academy is FREE for participants and open to fire district residents at least 18 years of age who submit an application and fulfill the minimum program requirements. The academy will be limited to 15 individuals and will be held on five Wednesday evenings and one Saturday, starting September 5, 2018. Following the academy’s completion, participants will be recognized at a graduation held on Tuesday, October 16, at North Metro Fire’s Headquarters during the District’s board meeting. Family and friends are invited to attend.
All Wednesday evening sessions will commence at 6 p.m. and last until approximately 8:30 p.m. Completion of a five-hour session at the District’s Training Center on Saturday, September 29 (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.), and a minimum of 10 hours (i.e., four classroom sessions) is required for participants to successfully complete and graduate from the Citizens Academy. Please refer to the Citizens Academy Class Schedule for more specific details on each session.
